Relocating from the west coast to the east coast is a huge move that can not only be a stressful adjustment, but a culture shock as well. While you are still in the same country, the two opposite coasts are dramatically different in many ways, and you may find yourself missing many of the things that you have grown accustomed to while living on the west coast. Since 1949, AMS Bekins has been moving individuals, families, and companies from the San Francisco Bay Area to New York and other destinations on the east coast. Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about moving to and from the American coastlines—and why staying organized and knowing what to expect are key components of a smooth and stress-free relocation.
Today, we are going to look at some of the things you’re likely to miss when moving from the west coast to the east coast for those planning on making the transition.
Finding Authentic Mexican Food Can Be Difficult
If you love Mexican food, you may be in for a shock. Due to the location of California and other west coast states, the availability of authentic Mexican food is much higher. When moving to the east coast, it can be quite difficult to find an authentic Mexican food restaurant. However, to compensate for the lack of fresh Mexican selections—there are plenty of authentic Italian, Cuban, Chinese, and other cuisines to choose from.
The Winters Are Much Colder
The west coast is known for its beautiful weather and beach-ready atmosphere. Unless you’re moving to Florida, the east coast couldn’t be any more different. The winters are harsh and you can expect to get well acquainted with snow and the joys that come with it such as snow plowing, learning to drive in it, and not getting the day off due to snow on the ground.
You May Have To Adjust To Using More Public Transportation
With the type of traffic that you can expect from densely populated smaller states, many people in major east coast cities resort to public transportation to get to and from work. This means that you may have to learn how to navigate the subway system or bus system to get to your destination.
The Culture Is Much Different
One of the biggest differences you will notice when it comes to moving from the west coast to the east coast is the culture change. California culture is a little more laid back depending on where you come from as the beautiful weather and picture-perfect beaches foster a more free-spirited culture. New York is way busier and more business-oriented, so you will see many of your peers living a more rushed lifestyle.
Fashions are Much Different
While it goes without saying, one of the biggest differences you can immediately notice when moving from California to New York, Washington, D.C., or other east coast metropolitan areas is the fashion. While this has a lot to do with the weather, New York houses is much more formal and business-focused than California, so you will notice people dressed in more black, grey, and darker tones. On the other hand, California fashions look much more youthful in comparison, and you’ll find that many people are dressed in more of a laid-back fashion style (think t-shirts and jeans). Of course, each sector of each coast will have its own style.
Sunsets in Winter Come Fairly Early
If you have ever lived in New York, you know how quickly the sun sets around the beginning of December. With the way that the Earth is tilted, when the winter solstice arrives, you will start to notice sunsets starting before 5pm which can be a bit of an adjustment for people accustomed to sunnier climates.
